Martin Luther reformed the faith, and Bach set it to music. Two cantatas composed for the Feast of the Reformation and one for the Feast of St. Michael exemplify Bach's sacred writing. Three-hundred years later, in honor of the tercentennial of the Augsburg Confession, Mendelssohn's “Reformation” Symphony was conceived to celebrate the richness of Protestantism.
